SC tells President PC polls cannot be held under old system

The President’s Office today made public the opinion of the court. Secretary to the President Udaya Seneviratne said that a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court had unanimously agreed that the election cannot be held under the Provincial Council (Amendment) Act since the President does not have the authority to declare the boundaries set out in the report handed over to the Minister by the Delimitation Committee. Accordingly the Supreme Court reached a decision on the matter on Friday and communicated its stand to the President. The Supreme Court has informed President Maithripala Sirisena that the Provincial Council elections cannot be held under the previous electoral system or the Provincial Councils (Amendment) Act, the President’s Office said.The opinion of the Supreme Court had been sought by the President. read more
