Commentary Big Ten finally remedies mistake of Leaders and Legends

We’ve all made bad decisions. Remember your freshman year when you wore an Ohio State shirt, OSU hat, OSU lanyard and cargo shorts around campus every day? That was brutal. We knew you went here. Or remember that one time when you decided to participate in extracurricular activities a little too much and had to miss out on Mirror Lake Night because you needed to lie down early? It’s OK. We’ve all been there. Admitting you erred and moving on is the best course of action when you make mistakes. Thankfully for everyone involved with Big Ten football, Jim Delany, the conference’s commissioner, is finally making that realization about a mistake that most people recognized the moment it happened in 2011. Leaders and Legends was a galactic, humongous, fill-in-your-own-superlative-here failure. As if everyone wasn’t laughing at our brand of Midwestern football already, we had to pile on by trying to be “edgy” and “creative.” Instead, we came off as “hilarious” and “trying way too hard.” Honoring legends and building leaders, they said. This is completely dumb, I said. But good news, folks. With the recent ESPN.com report that the Big Ten has stopped huffing glue and come to its senses, deciding to change the names of its divisions to “East” and “West” for the 2014 season, we can finally be proud of our conference again. Not only are the names changing, ESPN is reporting the alignment is changing, too. Finally, and most notably, Michigan will be moving to OSU’s division. This is good news for two reasons. First, “The Game” will still mean something. Could you imagine both teams having their divisions locked up and resting their starters in the regular season to prevent injuries before meeting in the Big Ten title game? It would be a travesty, and it is possible under the current alignment. Also under the reported new alignment, a win against Michigan will mean more for OSU in preventing the Wolverines from becoming conference champions because divisional losses impact the standings more than cross-divisional ones. Ruining Michigan’s season twice as hard? Sign. Me. Up. I praise Delany for this. It takes a lot of guts to tell everyone, “Hey, I blew it the first time, but I’m fixing it now.” Don’t get me wrong, Delany still has made some huge errors (Rutgers and Maryland) but for the most part, he has improved the Big Ten tremendously. He added a football power in Nebraska. He made the Big Ten conference the land’s richest with a way-before-its-time TV network. No one remembers how much backlash he faced when he basically started the Big Ten Network from scratch before the 2007 season. No one thought a single conference could support a TV network. Now? The Pac-12, SEC and Big 12 have all followed suit. Big Ten football might still be lagging behind nationally, but hey, Delany’s vision has made the Big Ten the richest conference in the country. The Leaders and Legends experiment was horrifying. Delany was to blame. But, with the news that its three-year run is mercifully coming to a close next year, I can praise Delany again for coming to his senses. He listened to his conference’s fans and made the change. Good for him. Better for us. And don’t get me wrong, I like the names East and West, but I’d like to use this space to propose a different pair: Teams Decimated By Urban Meyer Often and Teams Decimated By Urban Meyer Less Often, But Still Often Enough. Has a good ring to it, eh? I guess we’ll have to wait until 2015 for that fix. read more

Mountain Lion Found Dead in California May Have Been Poisoned

first_img Watch: Dolphin Leaps Feet Away From Unsuspecting SurferWatch: Deep-Sea Octopus ‘Billows Like a Circus Tent’ A mountain lion that was found dead last month in the Santa Monica Mountains in California had rat poison in its system, according to wildlife officials. The lion, dubbed P-47, had no visible wounds when its remains were discovered on March 21 by biologists from the National Park Service (NPS) after the lion’s GPS collar sent out a mortality signal.A necropsy revealed that the lion, dubbed P-47, may have succumbed to poisoning from anticoagulant rodenticide, commonly known as rat poison. (Photo Credit: Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area)According to a statement by the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, a necropsy revealed that the three-year-old mountain lion may have succumbed to poisoning from anticoagulant rodenticide, commonly known as rat poison.Biologists tested a sample of his liver and found that the animal had been exposed to not just one, but six different anticoagulant compounds. Internal hemorrhaging was also found in the head and lungs.“Although it’s not known exactly how P-47 ingested the poisons, researchers believe mountain lions are exposed through secondary or tertiary poisoning, meaning that they eat an animal that ate the poisonous bait, such as a ground squirrel, or an animal that ate an animal that consumed the poisonous bait, such as a coyote,” officials said.Researchers first marked P-47 when he was around four weeks of age with a tracking device. (Photo Credit: Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area)Researchers first marked P-47 when he was around four weeks of age at the den with a tracking device. He was later fitted with a GPS collar in January 2017 when he was 14 months old and weighed 108 pounds. At his last capture in January 2018, he weighed in at exactly 150 pounds, which tied him for the largest among all the mountain lions in the history of the NPS study.Biologists have documented the presence of anticoagulant rodenticide compounds in 21 out of 22 local mountain lions that they have been tested, including in a three-month-old kitten. Lab results for another mountain lion, P-64, who died a few weeks after the Woolsey Fire, also found six different anticoagulant compounds in his liver.Infographic illustrates how rodenticide works its way through the food chain and how local residents may be inadvertently poisoning wildlife. (Credit: NPS)Mountain lions are large carnivores that can weigh up to 150 pounds in California. Males use ranges of up to 200 square miles, although in Southern California, roads and development can limit movement. The National Park Service has been studying how mountain lions survive in an increasingly fragmented and urbanized landscape since 2002. Researchers have monitored more than 50 mountain lions in and around the Santa Monica Mountains. GPS collars provide detailed information about the animals’ ecology and behavior.More on Geek.com:Bobcat That Survived California Wildfire Gives Birth to Four KittensWatch: Colorado Runner Who Killed Mountain Lion Describes AttackArizona Wildlife Sanctuary Founder Mauled by His Own Tiger Stay on targetlast_img read more

NASAs InSight Lander Snaps Dreamy Sunrise and Sunset on Mars

The shots were taken starting at approximately 5:30 a.m. and then again starting at approximately 6:30 p.m. in local Mars time. Some details pop out more in the raw versions, however, the color-corrected versions show the photos as the human eye would see them. Tesla Sued Over Fatal Crash Involving Model X With Autopilot Engaged

first_img The family of a Tesla owner that was killed when the Model X he was driving with the Autopilot feature engaged crashed into a concrete highway median in California has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the carmaker. The lawsuit alleges Tesla’s Autopilot feature was “defective” and caused the death of Apple engineer Walter Huang, according to a press release.BREAKING NEWS: Tesla hit with lawsuit by family of Walter Huang, Apple Engineer who died last year when autopilot in Model X steered him into a traffic barrier Southbound 101 in Mountain View. #ABC7now pic.twitter.com/1cEql1vllc— Dan Noyes (@dannoyes) May 1, 2019Huang, who was 38, died from injuries sustained after his 2017 Tesla Model X slammed into a concrete highway barrier on U.S. 101 in Mountain View, Calif., on March 23, 2018. The vehicle’s semi-automated system “misread lane lines on the roadway, failed to detect the concrete median, and failed to brake the car, but instead accelerated into the median,” according to the complaint filed in the state court for Santa Clara County on April 26.A week after the crash, Tesla CEO Elon Musk published a blog post saying “the driver had received several visual and one audible hands-on warning earlier in the drive and the driver’s hands were not detected on the wheel for six seconds prior to the collision.”Tesla is “beta testing its Autopilot software on live drivers,” said Mark Fong, a partner at Minami Tamaki LLP, one of the firms representing Huang’s family. “The Huang family wants to help prevent this tragedy from happening to other drivers using Tesla vehicles or any semi-autonomous vehicles.”Family of Tesla Car Crash Victim Walter Huang Files Lawsuit Against Automaker, State of California (with @WalkupLawFirm) https://t.co/a3xlsahLda— Minami Tamaki LLP (@minamitamaki) May 1, 2019Huang’s family members told reporters that he’d mention how his vehicle would swerve toward the barrier while on Autopilot, and last year his brother said Huang complained to the Tesla dealership about it, according to Engadget. In his blog post, Musk said the reason this crash was so severe is because the crash attenuator, a highway safety barrier which is designed to reduce the impact into a concrete lane divider, had been crushed in a prior accident without being replaced. “We have never seen this level of damage to a Model X in any other crash,” he said. The allegations against Tesla include product liability, defective product design, failure to warn, breach of warranty, intentional and negligent misrepresentation, and false advertising. The lawsuit also names the State of California Department of Transportation as a defendant. Was Avengers California Screening Exposed to Villainous Measles

first_imgMove over, Thanos: Midnight moviegoers in Orange County, Calif., may have been exposed to measles during the opening night showing of Avengers: Endgame.Since the start of this year, more than 700 individual cases of the real-life Big Bad have been confirmed in 22 states—including California.Following reports in Los Angeles, Butte, and Sacramento, Orange County is the latest victim of the rapidly spreading disease. The patient—a 20-something woman from Placentia—allegedly contracted the illness during international travel “to one of many countries currently experiencing widespread” activity, according to the OC Health Care Agency (HCA).Officials did not say whether she had been vaccinated against measles.Considered infectious between April 23 and May 1, the unnamed patient is currently under voluntary isolation at home.“Orange County residents may have been exposed to measles since the ill person visited public locations while infectious,” the HCA announced.Presumably unaware of her condition, the woman appears to have gone to work in Santa Anna for three days, before attending the April 26 midnight screening of Avengers in Fullerton.Anyone at the following potential exposure locations around the same time as the patient should review their vaccination history and monitor themselves for fever and/or an unexplained rash:5 Hutton Centre Drive, Santa Anna, between 7:45 a.m. and 7:15 p.m. on April 23, 24, and 25AMC movie theater, 1001 S. Local residents are encouraged to stay up-to-date with their vaccinations. The airborne illness spreads through coughing and sneezing; symptoms like fever, cough, runny nose, inflamed eyes, and full-body rash usually develop 10 to 12 days after exposure, and last seven to 10 days.“Measles is a highly contagious and potentially severe disease that causes fever, rash, cough, and red, watery eyes,” Interim Orange County Health Officer Nichole Quick said in a statement.“It spreads very easily by air and by direct contact with an infected person,” she explained, “and is contagious from approximately four days before the rash appears through four days after the rash appears.“The MMR [measles, mumps, and rubella] vaccine is a simple, inexpensive, and very effective measure to prevent the spread of this serious virus,” Quick added.Almost all cases of measles in the US begin with people who traveled to countries where the disease is prevalent: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have issued travel notices for Israel, Ukraine, Japan, Brazil, and the Philippines.More on Geek.com:MIT ‘Hackers’ Transform Great Dome Into Cap’s Shield‘Avengers: Endgame’ Smashes Box Office Records With $1.2B OpeningAdidas Celebrates ‘Avengers’ With ‘Heroes Among Us’ CollaborationThe Best ‘Avengers’ Toyslast_img read more

Mortal Kombat 11 Krushes the Kompetition

first_imgStay on target Joker and The Terminator Cross Over Into ‘Mortal Kombat 11’‘Mortal Kombat 11’ Kharacter Guide: Nightwolf The Mortal Kombat series is arguably bigger now than when it made its blood-soaked debut in the early 90s. Despite its resurgence in popularity, I missed out on 2011’s Mortal Kombat and its sequel, Mortal Kombat X. I’d heard nothing but good things, but one can’t always make time to play every game out there. Thankfully, I received a review copy of Mortal Kombat 11 and got to check out how the series has evolved since I played it back in the day. After spending nearly two weeks with it, I can honestly say Mortal Kombat 11 is one of the best fighting games of 2019.Like the two previous installments, Mortal Kombat 11 has a fairly involved story that mixes, magic, mysticism, and science fiction. Since I didn’t play the preceding games, I had absolutely no idea what was going on. Unless it concerned the characters and stories I remember from the first three entries, the story had me completely lost. Despite that, I appreciate the epic scope of the narrative and how cinematic it felt. Again, I’m iffy on the particulars, but the exciting nature of the story had me hooked from beginning to end.Mortal Kombat 11 has some of the best fighting game controls I’ve experienced in recent years. I love how smoothly I’m able to chain combos together, and how easy it is to perform special attacks and fatalities. I found the controls stiff in the closed beta, so I’m happy to see the finished product vastly improved. Mortal Kombat 11 just plays great.Since this is a Mortal Kombat title, it contains insanely over-the-top violence. This is by far the goriest fighter I’ve played in years. Every punch, kick, slash, and stab produces copious amounts of blood. Accentuating the violence are Fatal Blows. Players can perform these after receiving a great deal of damage to turn the tide of battle. Fatal Blows are essentially mid-match fatalities, though they don’t result in death if the player on the receiving end has enough health. I don’t know how opponents manage to survive some of these moves, but hey, that’s what this game is all about.Every cracked bone, ruptured spleen, and bloody entrail is masterfully brought to life thanks to the superb graphics engine. Each character and background contains a stunning and impressive amount of detail. I can’t think of a single stage or setting that doesn’t look magnificent. What I like best about the graphics is how they’re not entirely realistic. Yes, they’re detailed, but still stylized. This helps Mortal Kombat 11 stand out from other fighters. It also prevents the gore from appearing too graphic.center_img In addition to the aforementioned story mode, players can fight a series of opponents in Klassic Towers. If you’ve played previous installments, then you know what you’re getting here. Completing a Klassic Tower with different characters lets you see their individual endings. Some of these are extremely silly given how they’re mostly about travelling through time and changing the past. I found it slightly disappointing to see the endings were essentially still images with narration. However, given the sheer number of characters, I can let this slide.Towers of Time is an interesting take on Towers because each level contains a different modifier, or combinations of several. Players may have to face multiple opponents simultaneously or fight while avoiding missiles. They may even have to avoid missiles while fighting several foes all at once. Thankfully, they can purchase modifiers to help balance the scales. Using a health modifier in a stage where one is poisoned comes in handy. I don’t personally care for Towers of Time because it feels gimmicky, but I’m sure many will love the insane challenges it provides. The Krypt is a radical departure from the rest of the game because you control a character in third person. The purpose of the Krypt is to explore a vast dungeon and unlock treasure boxes with the Koins and currency collected from other modes. One fun thing about the Krypt is you have to solve puzzles to advance to other areas. The Krypt also brims with a wide variety of Mortal Kombat Easter Eggs. Players have to grind a lot in order to gain keys and koins to unlock treasure chests and rooms. As you can imagine, this becomes tedious after a while. Since the Krypt mostly exists to provide different armor pieces, I don’t find it particularly useful. If you’re into that sort of stuff, you’re probably going to spend most of your single player experience grinding for Krypt loot.If you’re tired of ripping the spines out of A.I. opponents, you can fight others online or locally. Local is always a blast since you’re fighting against someone who’s actually in the room with you. If you can’t find someone to fight locally, you can always jump online. I found online matches stable, for the most part. Choppy gameplay from slow servers wasn’t an issue that cropped up often. This isn’t surprising given NetherRealm’s experience in this field. Playing online felt as responsive as playing locally. Those new to Mortal Kombat or who’ve been away like me will appreciate the depth of training mode. The tutorial teaches players everything they need, from basic combos and special moves, to more advanced techniques. A fun thing about training mode is how you actually learn fighting game terminology. Even as a person who has played fighting games since the beginning, I can admit I’m not familiar with most of this lingo. Thanks to training mode, I’ll be able to better understand what’s being said at EVO.Fatality Training is my personal favorite training mode. It is sometimes difficult to know where to position yourself to successfully perform fatalities. In this mode, a colored square underneath your character’s feet shows you the proper distance. If it’s red, then the fatality won’t work. If it’s green, you’re good to go. Fatalities are the best part of any Mortal Kombat so I’m thankful to see this mode included. Those looking for more personalization will find it in Kustomize mode. Here, players can change how characters look with different gear pieces. This isn’t all for show, since you can level up individual gear pieces and add augmentations. Augments are most useful for some of the trickier Towers of Time challenges. You can also change special moves, fatalities, and even intro cinematics. This makes your character unlike anyone else’s. While I appreciate the amount of options in Kustomize, I prefer playing with the base characters. Also, don’t worry about going online and fighting against created characters since they’re not available in competitive modes.I honestly had no intention of playing Mortal Kombat 11. Yes, it looked badass, but I felt hesitant about it since I missed the last two installments. I’m glad I got a review copy because I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I’ve lost most of my passion for fighting games in recent years so it’s great to play one I truly want to master. I know there’s a ton of fighters out there, but Mortal Kombat 11 is one you don’t want to miss out on if you’re a fan of the genre. Pornhub Maybe Wants To Buy Tumblr

first_img SteelSeries Arctis 1 Is World’s First USB-C Wireless Gaming HeadsetGeek Pick: Shure MV88+ Is An Excellent, On the Go Microphone Kit Stay on target Late last year, those of us who have ever been Horny Online collectively wept as infamous microblogging website Tumblr purged itself of the diverse array of sexual content that had come to define its identity over the years. As progressive as that smut might have been, the new owners at Verizon just wanted to wash their hands of it. However, it’s becoming increasingly obvious that Verizon wants to wash its hands of Tumblr in general, actively seeking buyers for the website it itself had just bought from Yahoo. And while this might not be a serious offer, Pornhub VP Corey Price recently told BuzzFeed that the adult website might be interested in acquiring Tumblr and resurrecting its lusty past. Critics of Pornhub say that might lead to its own problems of sex work exploitation, but at least it would make Tumblr NSFW again. Here’s our original story. In an internet full of increasingly, depressingly right-wing communities in spaces like Twitter and YouTube and Reddit, I always appreciated Tumblr as a social media that seemed to have progressive values baked into its DNA. It wasn’t without problems, that’s what happens when a bunch of fandom-obsessed children just figuring out their political identities all gather in the same space. But Tumblr’s heart always felt like it was in the right place, and a large part of that was due to the open, expressive, and inclusive approach to a spectrum of sexualities permitted in the user-submitted content. However, that’s no longer about to be the case. Reminding everyone that it is in fact still owned by Yahoo which is now owned by Verizon, Tumblr will be purging itself of nearly all adult content on December 17.This ban is the final, most decisive act in what had already been a subtle conservative shift for the site over the past few months. Minors were forced into anti-NSFW safe modes. The iOS app got some adjustments after being pulled for child pornography. Now let’s be clear. Making sure there is no child pornography (or meth) on your website is absolutely something you should do. You have to do it.And there will be exceptions to even this upcoming new policy. Posts can still include health-related nudity like breastfeeding and mastectomies or political nudity like sculptures or protest speeches. Written text is also still fair game, your erotic friend fiction is safe. But if you’re basically pornography, even awesome and artistic pornography, you’re basically no longer allowed on Tumblr. “Adult content primarily includes photos, videos, or GIFs that show real-life human genitals or female-presenting nipples, and any content—including photos, videos, GIFs and illustrations—that depicts sex acts,” the new rules read.Offending posts will be flagged and made private. And the reaction seems to be that this is a bit much. There’s totally value in there being permissive, consensual, exploratory sexual spaces online, especially for vulnerable communities like queer kids or sex workers. Plus, who even really cares about a version of Tumblr without content like this?I guess we’ll all find out when the New Family Friendly Tumblr goes live on December 17. For NSFW stuff that’ll still exists check out our posts on YouPorn’s response to Starbuck’s porn ban and the horrifying thought of Elon Musk erotica.last_img read more
